What did Adam and Eve eat (before the apple)?

Join Rabbi Joel Levy in this three-part class to explore how different generations of sages conceptualised the ideal relationship between humans and the natural world. We will look at how the Talmud weaves biblical sources to imagine and re-imagine paradise before the eating of the forbidden fruit. What did Adam and Eve eat (before the apple)?

What do we imagine Adam and Eve eating in The Garden of Eden? The answer to this question will tell us a lot about how different generations of sages conceptualised the ideal relationship between humans and the natural world. The Talmud offers some rather strange competing images of Adam and Eve’s time in the garden. In these sessions we will look at how the Talmud weaves biblical sources to imagine and re-imagine paradise before the eating of the forbidden fruit. This series is for beginners to intermediates in Talmud, and will encourage reading sources in their original languages. We will elucidate the use of technical terms in the Talmud as well as exploring philosophical questions about the ethics of consumption.
